PSY 3171 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Binge Eating Disorder, Binge Eating, Eating Disorder
Document Summary
Meets diagnostic criteria for binge eating disorder. Core features: binge eating (in absence of compensatory behaviours) Sometimes prevent: emotional eating, over-evaluation of body shape/weight, body dissatisfaction, weight concerns, dietary restriction. Sometimes comorbid with: anxiety and substance use disorders. Moderate to high heritability of an, bn, and bed 50% Some people argue an equal impact of genes and environment on risk for an eating disorder. But genes and environment interact from day 1 so it is not really possible to purely separate what is genetic vs what is purely environmental e ects. Genetic in uences possibly related to serotonin and dopamine. Associated w/ an but not consistently with bn or bed. Environmental factors: abuse history, prenatal factors, dieting, development. Candidate genes: serotonin short allele of 50httlpr and dopamine d2/d3 receptors. Gene-environment interaction models: environmental factors interact w/ genotype to cause risk for ed. Ex: being genetically vulnerable + history of abuse = ed symptoms (phenotype)
