Pathway: norepinephrine neurotransmitters (ne) begin synthesis pathways in the locus coreleus in the brainstem. Norepinephrine cells are said to be noreadrenergic because norepinephrine is also know as noradrenalineine. The output of the locus coeruleus projects to the neocortex and thalamus/thalamic nuclei. Projects to the pons, spinal cord, and cerebellum for movement-based reactions. Because of wide projection of noadrenerigic cells it is believed that norepinephrine is related to a variety of behavioural and physiological reactions such as arousal, hunger, attention, and sexual behaviour. Like dopamine, norepinephrine can exist in the same nerve terminal as other neurotransmitters. Norepinephrine is cleared from the synaptic cleft by the same membrane transporter as dopamine. The cns contains four types of norepinephrine receptors a1, a2, b1, b2 which are shared with dopamine. Norepinephrine is degraded by mao and comt. Reserpine precent the storage of monoamines in vesicles.
