Why study cognition in couples/family: behavioural research assumes that behaviours have inherent meaning. In fact, behaviours are ambiguous: example: you see a couple and the female pushes her boyfriend. It could be a joke or could be real: meaning in relationships comes partly from the behaviour, and partly from how we interpret it, the meaning could have been interpreted completely badly. A will say something to b, then b would react to what a expressed based on that interpretive filter of b. Then b will respond based on a"s interpretive filter. This cycle continues until the conversation is done. Three levels of relationships knowledge (fletcher, 2002: general beliefs and values about social behaviour. We all have general beliefs and values ex. Look out for n 1; people are the worst; strangers are friends waiting to happen; etc: general beliefs and values about relationships.
