Broken family: lone-parent, step, skipped-generation, and blended families. Lone-parent family: mom/dad w/o spouse or common-law partner, living in a dwelling with one or more kids. Women in higher education and labour force, gaining economic independence family benefits available to help working mothers support their kids so more unmarried moms are better able to raise their kids. In 1931 mostly because of widowed than divorce like now more children lived with lone-parent because more mothers died during birth and more fathers died during war. Cohabitation increased which is less stable as marriages. Higher maternal mortality resulted in more men being lone parents but now lone parent families are from divorce and mostly mothers get custody.
