Chapter 7: the middle years of the family. The baby boomers: 45-64 years in age. They are known as the baby boomers because they were born in the post-war era when the economy was doing well and so the birth rate went up: those 55-64 outnumber those in 15-24 age group. They out number those that are entering the workforce. These years of the family life cycle are transitional: period often marks splitting of one family into two or more as children leave families of origin and form their own nuclear families of procreation. Midlife is a 20 year period so a lot can happen; it is a time of great transition. Stressor: a life event that can produce change in the family system.
