PSY 3122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Moral Absolutism, Industrial Revolution, Sexology
Document Summary
For the past 2000 sexual repression was influenced to christian beliefs. Victorian times we see a shift where sexual repression was justified through personal hygiene and decorum rather than religious beliefs. Here they believed there was a correct balance of fluids in the body. They believed that you not only had to have the correct balance of blood in the body but they had a tremendous fear of "spermatorrhea". It was important that a man not lose lots of semen which could cause feeble mindedness, lack of energy. Masturbation would cause hairy palms and blindness, and weakness and even death. Dichotomy occurs where we see the first time in history "men vs women". So we now see sex as a husband"s privilege and the wife"s responsibility. So women are now put in charge of controlling men"s sexual urges and maintain that delicate balance of bodily fluids. They deal with the huge amounts of sexual repression during this time through prostitution.
