In modern day, many people watch sex before having sex, so they have certain expectations that may not be in line with reality. In some periods (such as the victoria era) media that referenced sexuality had to be very subtle because of the influence of religion. Concerns about sexual activity leading to a population explosion, side-by-side with the fact that selling contraceptives was illegal, meant that advertising contraceptives needed to be treated very delicately. Population growth was a problem may not have enough resources, needed to keep media references subtle.
