PSY 3121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Lionel Tiger, Time-Sharing, Job Satisfaction
Document Summary
Friendships: children segregate themselves according to gender early in development, no distinction until ~ 3+ years, until then, cross-gender play, segregation, 4 and after through middle childhood, responsiveness and sharing reserved most for same-gender friends. In children, both boys and girls discern between acquaintances ( school friends ), friends, and best friends. Men valued status and health moderately more than women did: none of these factors were moderated by race/ethnicity. Even more important, the relative ranking of responses is the same for women and men: both women and men are much more likely to offer sympathy than joke around or change the subject. Men"s and women"s responses to a friend"s problems in the basow & rubenfeld 2003 study. Similar studies: adult women and men were asked what they would say in response to a series of hypothetical same-gender friend problems, and responses were coded into different categories (2004).
