Eyes evolved 500 million years ago in cambrian explosion. Evolution of multiple cone types- early fish 360 million years ago already had 4 types. Nocturnal rat-like mammal ancestors had just 2, as do many modern mammals. Many birds and fish have 4 probably aiding in mate selection. Functions of color vision- aids in segmenting scenes. Easier= to find prey this way or avoid prey. Monkeys use colour vison to pick fresh leaves and ripe fruit. Colour also indicates male health in birds and fish and is used for mate selection. In zebra finches, females prefer males with orange check patch. Different species have different colour capabilities due to different evolutionary pressures. Color experiences result from an interaction between physical properties of objects and light, and the physiology of an observing organism. Laser emits single wavelength (similar to pure tone hearing). Color circle- shows color experience produced by each individual wavelength.
