Document Summary
Adolescence a life stage between the time puberty begins and the time adult status is approaches, when young people are preparing to take on the roles and responsibilities of adulthood in their culture. A fairly new term (early 20th century) Almost all cultures recognize adolescence as a life period. The length, content, and daily experience differs across cultures. Different cultures define adult status, roles, and responsibilities differently. Both plato and aristotle viewed adolescence as the third distinct stage of life (ages 14 to 21) in which the capacity for reason first develops. Plato argued that there is no point in education before age 7 because the mind is too underdeveloped. Aristotle viewed children as similar to animals, in that both are ruled by the impulsive pursuit of pleasure and only in adolescence can we begin to exercise reasoning. Young people were considered innocent, having lack of knowledge and experience.
