Document Summary
Lecture 3: cognitive and brain development, sept 29th, 2015. Invincibility or invulnerability: adolescent egocentrism, what can we learn from brain development, all about timing , wrap up. Interaction between biology and environment (from last class) Theory that both genetics and environment makes essential contributions to human development but are difficult to unravel because our genes actually influence the kind of environment we experience. 3 types of ways in which genotype affects environment (cid:18535) passive (cid:18535) evocative (cid:18535) active. Passive: genetically related parents provide environment that fits both parent and child; parents provide. Evocative: child"s genetically influenced behavior elicits reactions from others; influences others to provide an environment that corresponds to his or her genetics. Active: child selects some environments over others (niche-picking); seek out environments that correspond to their genetics. Hypothetical-deductive reasoning: process by which thinker can systematically test possible solutions to a problem, arrives at answer and can defend and explain.
