Culture will have an effect, roles that are available to you. Idea of collectivist culture vs individualist (also vary in terms of socialization broad vs narrow) Individualist: independant self: encourages reflection of that self. Having high self esteem is generally a good thing, except narcissistic. Collectivist: interdependent self: family, ethnic group, country comes first. Group and relationships within group that are most important. High self esteem is not necessarily encouraged, if threaten cohesion of group= threaten group= not good. Ado think about themselves differently, changes in self understanding. Ado more abstract terms (ex: shy, extroverted, smart, sensitive, etc) Actual self: way you currently perceive yourself to be right now. Number of possible selves and how you might be. Ideal self: how i would like to be (usually positive) Feared self: what you are afraid of becoming (image you are dreading to become) Can have some downsides, ideal vs. real, usually some gap.
