To reap benefits: welcome conflicting viewpoints, maintain a rational disinterest (do not become to emotionally invested) Opinions: opinions may be based on research and careful thought out or be unsupported and unreasoned arguments. Disagreements are not just venting or emotions. Can arise when facts and values are confused. Values are based on beliefs and preferences. Rational ways to argue: i. deductive and ii. A series of related statements that fit together. Leads to probable conclusions. : inductive forms: Factors for deductive: are premises true or false, does the conclusion follow from the premises. Analogy: nature and number of characteristics, strength of similarities.
