Verbal and non-verbal communication of interest in another person: without it, relationships are almost impossible. We irt to get sex, a relationship, or just for the sake of it (i. e. to see if i"ve still got it ) Evidence shows that a compliment is interpreted as irtation when there is effort. Opening lines that are innocuous or direct are preferred to cute or ippant ones. Most people irt using subtle cues (i. e. non-verbal cues: gaze, body posture, facial expressions, touch, grooming gestures. These cues are ambiguous, which allows people to make multiple interpretations. Allows both parties to save face in case there is no sexual interest. Most irtation occurs through both modes of communication (verbal and non-verbal) Women use gazing, touching, facial expressions, and grooming gestures: disinterested women stop irtations with non-verbal behaviours early in the interaction. Men primarily rely on touch: disinterested men are slower at stopping non-verbal irtation.
