Incentive-sensitization hypothesis: aka (cid:498)wanting and liking(cid:499) (ypothesis, liking shows tolerance, when you take drug = liking (pleasure, pleasure shows tolerance (decreases with use, wanting shows sensitization, when you get stimuli associated with drug = wanting/craving, ex. Liking the smell of coffee or fries wanting coffee or fries: wanting sensitizes through encounters with drug cues, drug dose taken to sustain liking wanting gets worse. Modesty, chastity, pacificity: alcohol myopia (nearsightedness, when drunk, people respond to cues that are immediate (in space and time) and ignore cues distant in space and time (e. g. possible consequences) Hormones: chemical messengers released by endocrine glands (e. g. ovaries, testes, pituitary, adreanal glands, pancreas, etc. ) and carried by bloodstream to target cells. Three main types of hormones: homeostatic: hold body chemistry constant (like a thermostat, reproductive: causes sex differences, facilitates sex, stress: improves response to challenges, emergencies.
