PSY 2105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Syntactic Bootstrapping, Baby Talk, Speech Perception
Document Summary
Experience with language helps babies conquer task of segmenting continues stream of speech into individual words. Location of a words stress also helps them learn english. Listening preferences: babies prefer mother to baby talk over mother to adult, have preference for their mother and can discriminate phonemic categories more easily. Early sounds: 2 months they produce one-syllable vowel sounds (cooing, ahh, ooh etc. ) Referential communication=talking about something in the environment/showing, pointing etc. Symbolizing objects= using actions to define something, like talking on the phone. Late in first year they use specific sounds to function as words for an object, learn words easier when they contain sounds the child already knows. Semantics=study of meaning in language: early lexical development: 18 months children possess lexicon (vocabulary of words) of about 100 words they know and 200 words they don"t understand. Naming explosion=children suddenly acquire words (especially labels) at a high rate. May be related to ability to categorize objects.
