Abnormal psychology: study the symptoms, causes, progress, development, treatment and prevention of mental illness, also known as psycho-pathology. How prevalent are disorders: 26% of people said they experiences mental illness in the past 12 months, 46% of people said they experienced mental illness in their life, 60% do not seek help. Why don"t they seek help: low income, no health insurance, no access to help living in rural areas, people don"t understand mental illness, stigma about going for help, defining psych. Statistically infrequent: only a very small number of the population of interest exhibit this behaviour, then it is likely to be considered abnormal. Deviant: does it deviate from the norms and standards from the environment you live in. Distressing: they have to be personally distressed by the problem, some people may not be distressed by their disorder, and may deny being abnormal. Dysfunctional: harmful to the person or harmful to others and disruptive, understanding psychological disorders.
