Document Summary

People are terrified of being fat, so they go to extremes to starve themselves. They reduce their caloric intake to the point of starvation (sometimes 15% below healthy weight) Some may spend a few hours a day exercising. A young woman with anorexia is up to 12x more likely to die. They go through binge eating episodes, and consume huge # of calories in one intake. They eat treats such as cake or ice cream. Although they may not binge everyday, after it happens they feel guilty. They usually induce vomiting, and/ or abuse laxatives and enemas. Their body weight is usually normal or slightly above average. They do not induce vomiting, laxatives, or enemas. Biochemistry: linked and associated with low levels of serotonin and dopamine. Anorexia is linked with abnormalities in the brain (areas associated with eating and body image are larger than normal) and with abnormal hunger hormones.
