Critical periods: in order for development to proceed properly ex. if you deprive baby owls of hearing, they will never be able to hear. Women: born with all eggs + some more. More boys are born with birth defects. 58% of zygotes die before making it out of the fallopian tubes. Age: when mother is 40+ --> more deformities. <18 ---> higher rate of down syndrome. Ex. lot of babies born with deformities in minimata bay 1950"s -1960"s.
