Emerging adulthood (18 to 25) is not a traditional teen but does not have all responsibilities of an adult. Factors: genes, health, body size, physical activity, hormones/environment, all in the family. If the biological dad missing and if the mom is not with the biological dad, it makes puberty start earlier. Primary sexual characteristics will develop: organs linked with reproduction will mature and enlarge. Secondary characteristics: signal sexual maturity, not linked with reproduction. Landmarks: spermarche (first ejaculation, menarche (first period) Taller, muscular, athletic, popular, trusted and more freedom. Poor body image, more eating disorders, depression, risk of gained weights. Social network breakdown and more control from parents. Adolescent brain: under construction, more neurons form, synapse, pathways, and connections, last part to mature: frontal lobes, surge in dopamine, pleasure pathways are immature, overreact to reward. Pruning: more plastic than adult brain, more vulnerable. Personal fable: believe they are invincible and experiences are isolated.
