Document Summary
There are different ways of looking at abnormal behaviour: deviation from a statistical norm(atypical) i. e. the bell curve, deviation from social norms(disruptive), abnormal behaviour maladaptive(in a social group), lack of justi cation(unjusti able), personal distress. A psychological disorder is a deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional behaviour pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. There are ve qualities needed to evaluate someone as normal : ef cient perception of reality, an ability to exercise voluntary control over behaviour, self-esteem and acceptance, an ability to form affectionate relationships, productivity. When understanding psychological disorders, there are many theories and opinions: Ancient cultures(chinese, hebrew, and egyptian) believed in demons. Demons were known as the people who created psychological disorders within someone. Trephination is a surgical procedure done to release evil spirits. They would use different instruments to drill into their brain and release the demons. Religion was extremely powerful and entrenched into your belief system. This explains why religion was a big part of science.
