Document Summary
Structure: consists of 2 major systems- central, peripheral. Central (cns) consists of brain and spinal cord. Peripheral (pns) consists of all the nerves in the body. Receives info from sensory organs, analyzes it, organize and integrate it with other existing info. Uses this info to send out messages to muscles and glands, producing behaviours and controlling movements. Neurons: basic unit of communication in nervous system. Sensory (receive info from sensory organs, transmit this info to cns using nerves; Interneurons (carry messages between neurons, organize and integrate info); Motor (carry messages from brain & spinal cord to muscles and glands) Manufacture everything the neuron needs for survival and growth. Dendrites- thin, tube-like structures, extend out from cell body. Increase surface area of soma, receive info from other neurons. Terminal branches/ axon terminals: tiny nobs at the end of axon branches. Myelin sheath- fatty like substance that covers some axons.
