An inappropriate response is followed by punishment. Negative punishment: a valued stimulus is removed. Positive punishment: a response is followed by an aversive stimulus. Operant theory: to remove r, remove reinforce. Rarely- used to remove undesirable behaviour, but threatens safety of individual. Animal learns to avoid an aversive situation: ex: child goes to dentist and experiences pain. Avoidance of the aversive situation is reinforcing. All learning requires the appropriate responses to be reinforced.
