Document Summary
Part 1- the nervous system: function and structure. Nervous system: a communication network that receives information from the environment analyze, organize and integrate information used to send instructions to the rest of the body responsible for conscious experience. Dendrite: expands the surface area without taking up too much space and receives messages from neurons. Axon terminals: carries message produced by neuron and deliver to other neurons. Mylin sheath: white fatty substance that covers some axon branches, provides information and speeds transition of messages. Synaptic cleft or gap: little gap/distance between two neurons at the synapse. Brain is 80% water that has dissolved chemicals. Na+ sodium ions, cl- chloride ions, k+ potassium ions. Found inside and outside the neuron but in different concentrations neuron at rest- inside neuron at rest- outside. Even at rest it receives messages from other neurons - 2 kinds. When depolarization reaches about 50/55mv (threshold of excitement).
