Document Summary
Iconic: lasts only a fraction (. 5) of a second. Information that is not quickly passed to short-term memory decays rapidly. Involved in the retention of information for brief periods. Has a capacity of 5 to 9 bits of information (7+/-2) Miller (1956) demonstrated that people on average remember 7+/-2 pieces of information. You can chunk these pieces of information. Chunking: -meaningful unit of information which may be composed of smaller units example: memorize chunking works better if we can assemble into meaningful groups. Primacy effect is the tendency to remember initial information (the start of a list) Recency effect is the tendency to recall later information (the end of a list) Recall of rst and last items on a list is greater than recall of items in the middle of the list. Important for people who are entering into architecture, engineering, dentistry. Explicit memory memories can be described verbally, we are consciously aware.
