Document Summary

Psy1101-lecture 1-introduction to thinking critically with psychological sciences. Psychology: the scientific study of how we think/feel/behave. Limits of intuition: intuition can be valuable, but more often than not is seriously misleading. Over confidence: tendency to overestimate how much we know or how accurate knowledge is; we over estimate control and underestimate risks. Illusory correlation: tendency to perceive a relationship between two events when in reality there isn"t one; we pay more attention to events that support our belief and don"t pay attention to those which don"t. Perceiving order of random events: we are uncomfortable with randomness, look for patterns, come up with explanations to make the world orderly.
