Document Summary
Rational belief vi: belief and disagreement, here is an example of this (not uncommon) phenomenon, suppose someone (jack) asserts the following sentence, has(cid:374)o li(cid:272)e(cid:374)se (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t dri(cid:448)e a (cid:272)ar, jill might appear to disagree with jack. Rational belief vii: belief and disagreement, in this case, jack and jill are not actually disagreeing. They are using the same sentence (type!) to express different propositions. And, so, their apparent disagreement is not one: this is pretty common. These are different propositions, and so there is no disagreement here: jack and jill might go on to give explanations as to why they liked (cid:894)or did(cid:374)"t like(cid:895) the (cid:373)o(cid:448)ie. but, these are not arguments. [ja(cid:272)k does(cid:374)"t (cid:374)eed to convince jill that he liked the movie!: sometimes, there can (cid:271)e disagree(cid:373)e(cid:374)t i(cid:374) su(cid:272)h (cid:272)ases . Jack intends to express a different sort of proposition, like: this movie is a good film (in some precise critical sense), now, jill can certainly disagree with this proposition.
