Perception altered by psychoactive drugs: depressants (downers) inhibit neural function, decrease cortial arousal, stimulants (uppers) excite neural function, increase cortical arousal, hallucinogens, distort perception evoked sensory images. False clames about addiction: all drugs are addictive, no! some drugs there is no addiction (lsd) even highly addictive drugs (alcohol and heroin) 10% show addiction, medically shows less addiction. Alcool: most commonly used drug, alwaus depresses neural activity regardless of dose, reduced sns activity slows though process, but what happens if you depress a center that controles social inhibition, depressive fontal lobe control. Inability to inhibit inappropriate behavior: affect memory. Opiats: morthine, heroin, made from the poppy, depresses the nervous system activity reduces anxiety and pain, high doses of opiates produce euphoria, opiate use increasing dramatically. Stimulants: nicotine, coffee, meth, cocaine, mdma, excites the sns, makes tou stay awake, crash after the rush.
