The federal govt, under prime minister pierre elliott trudeau, declared in 1971 that canada would adopt a multicultural policy. Canada would recognize and respect its society including diversity in languages, customs, religions, and so on. In 1982, multiculturalism was recognized by section 27 of the canadian charter of rights and freedoms. The canadian multiculturalism act was then enacted by prime minister brian mulroney. The 1960s royal commission on bilingualism and biculturalism is often referred as the origin of modern political awareness of multiculturalism. In 1971, canada became one of the first countries to adopt an official multiculturalism policy. It was not until 1988 that it became an actual law: not only did this policy make sure equality was given to all people living in canada, aboriginal rights and canada"s official languages were also set. Immigration has played an integral part in the development of multiculturalism within canada during the last half of the 20th century.
