Two key theories in international relations to focus on: Realism founded by hans morgenthau (agreed upon by thomas hobbes) The world is a nasty, brutish place. Believes the peace in the world is possible if people work together. Hans morgenthau (and hobbes) thought that the struggle for power was innate, that states were constantly struggling with one another. Kenneth waltz takes the view that, even if a state is not interested in maximizing power for the sake of power, they have to recognize the possibility that other states might attack them. Therefore the original state must utilize the maximizing of power as a defense mechanism. The westphalian model believes that states are sovereign; states are the only real actors in the world, and the world is filled with anarchy (defined as a lack of authority/ruler to keep people in line)
