Marcuse was the guru of the student movement in the u. s. Didn"t agree with the students when they tried to burn down universities. Always maintained that the university should remain an ivory tower. Flirted with existentialism somewhat, influence by nietzsche, but he didn"t believe that a combination of marxism and existentialism was effective. He thought that, in some respects, the most important aspect of marx"s work was about the alienation of the individual. Sought to explain this, as well as sought to find some location where radical thought could be found. Marcuse was largely influenced by hegel, marx, and freud. Takes his social and historical theory from marx. Took his theory of human nature from freud. Marcuse therefore represents the theory of combining hegelianism with the categories used by marx. Also placed a great deal of focus on sexuality. For marcuse, reason becomes extremely important he is a rationalist.
