Athenian democracy: created a place where rational argument was needed. Philosophy was a necessity, therefore it was developed. Sophists: man is the measure of all things. Believed that political virtue could be taught, that the common people could learn about politics. Philosophers (plato) believed that the sophists caused the decline and degeneration of the polis, since they opposed the belief in nomos. Isegoria public speech (right to participate in the agora) Human agency: there was the belief that humans controlled their circumstances. The dike of bodies in death is the flesh and bone no longer hold together . No human agency, just necessity, human will is irrelevant. Two brothers, one is dishonored, king refuses to bury him. Antigone is adamant that her dishonored brother is buried. King decries that antigone is condemned to death. Who defines justice? (this is the dilemma that the tragedy of antigone explores. ) If we want someone to make shoes, we ask a shoemaker.
