Size of the polis remained at around 250,000 citizens, not much larger. The assumption was the polis and speech were impossible if people were preoccupied with satisfying basic needs. This is why the women stayed home, taking care of the house and raising the children the men were too busy being engaged in the polis. The polis was started by the greeks in the 8th century b. c. Polis eventually became cosmopolis (when the romans took over), which is a much larger institution than the polis. Arche: oneness of the whole population/political body. Eunomia: to be governed by oneself involves: Speech was one of the most important political tools. Eunomia implied a special use of speech: not the decree of one person via speech, but rather conversation through speech. The laws were written down and agreed on, not dictated by one individual. Nomos basileus: the law is king the law rules, not one individual.
