What happened was that in contrast to other european states is considered backwards. By 16th c france and britain had unity and law and politics. Italy no national unity, insecure, revolutions were the order of the day. These struggles between states, they were tentative to enter into alliances, what the italians wanted was itanlian unity. They had to deal with the popes, they were always being invaded by the north theres never any real political stability. M was very much a renaissance man, secular , they skipped over the mideivl time and went back to ancient times. progressive and it started in italy, they had this notion of excellence. One can suuposed to have a nappreciation for the art of politics. The prince was always aware of the side of politics.
