It is when you interact with other people that identity comes into play. Example: within canada, a person from alberta and ontario would stress their provincial identity, however if they meet in india, they would both bond over being canadian . Different parts of identity get activated in different areas. Identity has a dangerous side when it implies one identity is more virtuous or superior to another. Identity politics takes an offensive approach and tries to take away rights of other identities. A nation is a group that desires self-government through an independent state (68) An ethnic group is people bound by a common institution and culture (66) If you see yourself as part of a nation, you are part of it. States have an interest in naturalizing nationalism. They want people to see themselves as part of the state so that the state will seem more legitimate. Naturalizes state control and sacri ce of individual rights for the collective.
