Classical Liberalism in International Relations
- Evolved from the normative “idealist” model
- IR is governed by rules which change over time with the possibility of becoming peaceful
- Growing international organizations & cooperation among states (recprocity) will shift
the way people see the world and their (identity) individual views.
- Since 1945, weapons have gotten bigger and better, yet wars have gotten smaller and
less significant
(Kantian Roots) 18th century notion that three reasons are the advantages for peace
1. World Federation
2. Republics
3. Trade
Institutionalism (Neo-Liberalism)
- Interests of the state are considered between short and long-term decisions
- Game theory (reciprocity) whether good or bad, in most cases it is best to cooperate or
act in a way that is strategically advantageous in order to gain individual dominance so
one can coerce others into cooperation
International Regimes
- Expectation of actors converge in rules, norms and procedures in a given issue,
and form a coalition
- Become more transparent with each other, reducing the risk of cheating/lying
- Regimes are now seen in a more “realist” way
- Is hegemonic power embedded in formal institutionalism?
- Collective Security:
- Alliances of major actors to jointly oppose aggression by any other actor
- Kant’s ideal Federation of World States became the early 1900s League
of Nations, became the UN
- Two Keys to success for collective security:
- United Nations Security Council
- Limits to permanent-member veto system
Democratic Peace Theory
- We think democracies are more peaceful than authoritarian states, however, is this the
case?
- Democracies rarely fight other democracies, but is this for another reason (capitalism?),
identity politics (Cosmopolitan?), or a mere coincidence?
- Every nation struggled greatly to become a democracy
Liberal stance against Structural Realism
- Domestic Level is not considered
