Paradigm = how is an experiment to be conducted, what equipment is available to conduct the experiment. International relations paradigm: politics at global level, decisions of govts concerning their actions toward other govts, activities of int. orgs, global trade, armed conflict. Rltnshp b/n powerful agencies and armed conflict. Ir comes from section of poli sci & int. security studies, using the history of diplomatic relations & international law. Seeks to replace chronological history of diplomatic relations w/ sociological view. Purpose = dig deep to find reasons for conflict: study influence of deep forces of behaviour of int. actors, reasons are hidden, but they are still there. Purpose is to understand why & how int. events happen the way they do: ex. outbreak of war. Very difficult to make predictions in ir b/c there are too many variables.
