February 13th is our midterm exam at 10am. Key term: social class, class analysis, class politics in canadian politics. The concept is very sociology concept because its there to understand divisions in society. Perspectives on class: marist perspective- marx through history with an ongoing confrontation between two classes in a certain time. The division between the working class (proletariat) - who sold their labor and the capitalist class who owns the means of production. Bourgeoisie was able to dominate and exploit the working class: weberian perspective- max had a different perspective because what characterized class was a status that was associated with culture and prestige. Class is not only if your rich or not but is based on cultural markers and prestige: in the day to day policy world we use class indirectly all the time. This week stats canada released statistics on income inequality: we use class to compare ourselves to other countries- much or less inequality.
