POL 1102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Binary Opposition, Socialist Feminism, Daniela Gioseffi
Document Summary
Feminist theories as a political project to understand and end women"s inequality and oppression. Ft is critical of the biases of the study and practice of global politics. Many feminist theorists focus their research on areas where women are excluded or marginalized from the analysis of major issues and concerns in global politics. Offers a set of tools to analyze political events and policy decisions at all levels of analysis. The focus is as much on gender as on women. Gender = the social construction of the difference between men and women. Biology determines sex while a mixture of social and cultural norms and one"s own identity determines gender. Some variants of ft assume that there are natural and biological differences between men and women, while others do not make that assumption. The most interesting ft analyzes how concepts (state, sovereignty, security) are gendered" and how that gendering can have very different consequences for men and women.
