PHI 2396 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Daniel Callahan, Deontological Ethics
Document Summary
(cid:1) (cid:1) (cid:1) euthanasia which he will argue against (cid:1) (remember deontology!) Callahan there are 4 groups of arguments in favor of: self determination/autonomy: a universal ethical principle. When self-determination runs amok daniel callahan in virtue of this principle if someone decides that her life is no longer good, she could terminate it. Callahan in the case of assisted suicide (euthanasia), self- (cid:1) determination doesn"t hold any more, it is a social decision between two individuals, the one to be killed and the other, to be the killer. More than one person involved, and one person has more responsibility: not self-determination (like suicide where one person is responsible for decision of death) but a mutual social decision that requires moral and physical assistance. Callahan rachels argument is based on a confusion of causality. Physicians only have the power over death when there are available medical advances, therefore saving lives is only to the best of their abilities .
