**notes for next week will also be on the rst chapter. This class is a know how not a know that. Philosophy - using reasoning to study, contemplate, and deliberate on concepts and questions. It involves discussion of things with no clear answers. Philosophy is not concrete, they do not use the scienti c method. The answer to philosophical questions cannot be observed. The nature of the good/ the right/ the beautiful. Not all independent, can have metaphysical questions about ethics. We"ve gured out how to do something (ie. pick sex of baby) now we have to gure out if we should do it. Eg. the manhattan project - the atomic bomb ending ww2 in the paci c war killing many. Eg. syphallis experiment where it was allowed to progress in lower class black persons - treatment was known but withheld to gain knowledge on the progression. Ethics - the study of morality using the tools and methods of philospoy.
