The scientific community: how science is organized. In three ways; being done by business, government, universities. Sociologist- robert merton: a self regulating community governed by a strong ethical commitment, sharing of information, scepticism about results until strong evidence, strong commitment to the truth. Scientific funding - research and development (r&d: academic world, business world, government, research centred the peer reviewed journal, most departments are judged on how they much they publish, publish or perish system, publish or out the door. Career advancement: you only get noticed and promoted if you publish, you don"t receive money for your publications. John von neumann: did the wrong thing; didn"t finish his work, hang out with politicians (important, mathematician, computers, game theory, aristocracy of the intellect, democracy of the intellect. David suzuki: hasn"t done science in decades. Hendrik schon: producing a paper every 8 days, printed two different papers; one in science other in nature. Two different experiment but the results were the same.
