Should religion be closely connected with politics: Too rooted in what can be called a political program . There can be no religious criticism of politics. Should religion be very remote from politics: Religious values and principles have less relevance to the world. Platonic influence (actual world vs. ideal world) Heavenly, ideal realm, fulfillment, afterlife: city of man. Aristotelian influence (concerned with what is realizable) Political purpose: creating virtue (similar belief to the ancients) Aspects of religious law are knowable by reason. Overlapping spheres of politics, economics, and religion. Italy at this time was more just a collection of city states. In 1494, medici family is driven out of florence. Republic, with liberties and participation for citizens restored. Machiavelli had been official of florentine republic. 1512 medici family reinstated (by spanish invasion) Machiavelli is accused of plot against medici. He is imprisoned and tortured (eventually released) Cesare borgia is the hero of the prince.
