Men move from a state of nature to a social contract, common power. The state of nature is amoral and apolitical. Humans are like machines, what sets them in action is their endeavor, those are 2 things: appetite (things we immensely love) and aversion (strong dislike for) The state of nature is the state of scarcity. Felicity: the desire to accumulate as much as possible (being selfish), therefore making us fight for the things that are limited- hobbes calls this the state of war. Humans have 2 powers: original power: natural traits we are born with, and. Instrumental power: things we acquire within our lifetime. All men are equal in the ability to harm and kill one another- you cant trust no one. Right of nature: you have the right to preserve yourself in any means necessary. Law of nature: we must seek peace, so we have to give up some of our right of nature and our unlimited freedom.
