Phi 1101 chapter 4 - some valid argument forms. The validity of some arguments can be demonstrated by rigorous methods. The methods make use of the idea of argument forms. Arguments that are valid because of their sentential forms. The letters (p,q) are called sentimental variables. Can use any letters you want, usually use ones that remind us of the argument. Instead of using words like and, or, if, then, etc. to join simple sentences, we can replace them by using symbols. Either, or = v = disjunction: either it is a cat or a dog. And, but, yet = = conjunction: it is a dog, and it bites. If, then = = implication: if it bites, then you should be wary. Sentences of the form if, then" are called conditionals or hypotheticals. In a conditional, the component immediately following if is called the antecedent, the component sentence following then is the consequent.
