Document Summary
The purpose of analysing arguments (presenting arguments in standard form+ diagrams) is to aid in their evaluation. We discuss different ways of doing this, some will come in greater details in chapters 4, But, in order to evaluate an argument we must know something about different kinds of arguments. What is the difference between arguments (1) and (2)? (1) john is armed. So, john is dangerous. (2) all men are mortals. Therefore, socrates is mortal. (3) john is armed. Two types of arguments: deductive arguments (deduction or syllogism): In deductive arguments, the premises are meant to guarantee the conclusion. (100%) It is an argument intended to provide logically conclusive support for its conclusion. Deductive arguments are characterised as valid or invalid: non-deductive arguments (induction): In non-deductive arguments, the premises are meant to confer some high degree of probability on the conclusion.
