Document Summary
Argument - the set of statements, some of which (premises) offer support to one or more of the others (conclusion). Premises: claims/statement which offer support to the conclusion (reasons). Inference: relationship of (putative) support between the premises and the conclusion. Conclusion: claim/statement which is (putatively [try to]) supported by the premises (thesis). [statement that the premises are intended to support]. Therefore, investing in gold is aa smart move: [premise] when joseph takes the bus, he"s always late. [premise] and he"s taking the bus today, [conclusion] so i"m sure he"s going to be late. An argument gives us reasons for believing that something is the case that a claim is true or at least probably true. An explanation though, tells us why or how something is the case. Indicator words: words that frequently accompany arguments and signal that a premise or conclusion is present.
