PHA 3112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dementia, Prolactin, Anticholinergic
Document Summary
Treatment resistant depression: tells you that if you have a patient that you think isn"t responding to normal antidepressants then it is okay to give them antipsychotic drugs. But this should not be given unless someone is psychotic or manic. These drugs are not indicated for anxiety or agitation with dementia. They do not cure you, they just rid you of the most agitated symptoms, but they don"t make you normal so there needs to be follow up treatment after a person gets released from an institution. There are older and newer antipsychotic drugs: the fga"s and sga"s, fga is the first generation ( conventional", second is atypical, the mechanisms and side effects differ between the two but they have the same efficacy. There can be many different diagnoses from practitioner to practitioner. Only one kind can be tested for using a csf test. Make sure person doesn"t have another psychiatric condition or is intoxicated before diagnosing this.
