NSG 2317 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Unconditional Positive Regard, Eye Contact, Therapeutic Relationship
Document Summary
What the patient says about himself or herself. Receiving - by client - maybe different than what you intended to. The interview as a contract between patient and examiner. Impedes eye contact - if breaks eye contact too often. Shifts attention away from patient - diminishes his or her sense of importance. Interruption of patient"s narrative flow - may say "please slow down, I"m not getting it all" or the patient may see you recording furiously, and in an effort to please you, adjust his or her tempo to your writing - either way, the patient"s natural mode of expression is lost. Can be threatening during discussion of sensitive issues - eg. amount of alcohol and drug use, number of sexual partners, or incidence of physical abuse. Influence of ehrs and computer-assisted clinical documentation practices on interviewing practice. Need to stay focused on patient and convey active listening.
