Men were considered the first nurses; they were generally regular people who were helping people. Called male attendants and many were jesuit priests. Most of them had ties to religion. If people had good nursing care then you were more likely to not get sick. New colony of canada devastated by epidemics of infectious disease. Ex aboriginals, settlers etc: historically nurses care for the less fortunate. Florence nightingale: introduced nursing to the british army decreased morbidity and mortality, worked on improving standards and the status of nursing, founder of modern schools of nursing, work elevated the social acceptance of woman working. Schools were founded to train nurses and provide staff for hospitals as schools were actually in the hospitals. The first school was in st. catherines. Students were provided nursing care and education to junior staff in exchange for costs of living. Therefore you depended on the hospitals to live.
